THE FALL OF THE REBEL ANGELS (1562)
Archangel Michaël is getting even with his rebellious colleague
Lucifer and his followers. This story symbolises how the decay
of the church and its clergy was brought to a stand still in the
16th century.
Hovering and helmeted with a silly knot this keeper, holding a
pitchfork, looks at archangel Michaël conquering the rebellious
angels and condemning them to eternal suffering in hell, by
which their once so heavenly appearances decay into terrifying
reptile-like monsters.
